ICON® white spot removal is a gentle, non-invasive way to improve the appearance of chalky white or cloudy areas on teeth without drilling, anesthesia, or removal of healthy enamel. These spots often appear after orthodontic treatment, enamel demineralization, or developmental changes, and can make otherwise healthy teeth look uneven. White spot lesions occur when minerals are lost from the enamel, creating porous areas that reflect light differently than healthy tooth structure. This is common around braces, along the gumline, or after periods of poor oral hygiene, illness, or acid exposure. Even when the tooth is otherwise strong, these spots can stand out visually and affect confidence.
ICON uses a specialized resin infiltration system to penetrate the porous enamel where white spots exist. First, the surface is gently conditioned so the resin can reach deep into the affected area. The clear resin is then absorbed into the enamel and hardened with a curing light. Once sealed, the enamel reflects light evenly again, causing the white spot to blend naturally with the surrounding tooth.
Unlike veneers, bonding, or drilling and filling, ICON does not remove healthy tooth structure. It preserves the natural enamel while correcting the appearance of discoloration. This makes it one of the most conservative cosmetic treatments available for white spot lesions and mild enamel defects.
ICON is especially effective for white spots caused by orthodontic brackets, early enamel demineralization, fluorosis, or mild developmental enamel changes. It is designed for cosmetic improvement of the tooth surface and is not intended for cavities or structural damage that require traditional restorative care.
The ICON process is comfortable and usually completed in one visit. The tooth is cleaned, treated with a conditioning gel, and then infused with the ICON resin. After curing and polishing, the tooth has a smoother surface and more even color, often with immediate visible improvement.
Once the resin is locked into the enamel, it becomes part of the tooth structure. With good oral hygiene and routine dental care, ICON results are long lasting and resistant to staining. Because the surface is sealed, it can also help protect against further mineral loss in the treated area.
